I'm not much for cooking gadgets. I believe that a good knife can do pretty much anything, except perhaps flip pancakes. Not that I haven't tried. However, I amend this opinion when it comes to the apple slicer-corer.
Look at that thing of beauty.
I avoided buying one of these for awhile because they cost a whole TWELVE dollars and I was feeding a whole colony of moths in my wallet. Also, I have this thing about knives being the only tool you need in a kitchen. Did I mention that?
I know that good mothers don't let the annoying tedium of washing apples, peeling the stickers off of apples, cutting up apples into wedges, then finally cutting out the seeds out of the wedges prevent them from offering their beloved children a healthy snack.
Good mothers don't look at the bowl of apples bought precisely for healthy snacking needs and give their children Goldfish crackers or fruit snacks instead.
I would never be so lazy.
Except that I totally am.
So, this wonderful kitchen gadget has been my redemption. Here's a bonus. It kinda looks like a hat.
Imagine! Kids could dress fruits and vegetables to create characters. They could play with these characters! Maybe call it Mr. Applehead or something.
Tell me this idea will make my fortune.
With my super-duper gadget, I can slice enough apples for an army, which I did this morning. I say army, but what I meant was Owen's Preschool Class. They battle vigilantly against hunger and Swiper.
That damn sneaky fox.
This is what success looks like:
Since I'm supposed to be sharing a grilling recipe here today, here's a recipe for grilled apples.
Note that you don't even need to slice them, in the event you have yet to achieve Apple Slicer Nirvana.
This is a healthful dessert that is a win for kids and adults.
Grilled Apples
4 baking apples2 Tbsp. cinnamon
2 Tbsp. sugar
aluminum foil sheets Preheat grill. Wash, dry and core apples. In small bowl, combine cinnamon and sugar. Place each apple on center of aluminum foil sheet; spoon t tablespoon cinnamon/sugar mixture into core, and wrap apple in foil. Place foil-wrapped apples in small foil pie tins on the grill, and cook until apples are tender. Unwrap, discard foil and serve.

I have one of those and I lurve it. I didn't know you could grill apples?? Here in the south, we fry apples. Yum-yum!
What the hell? I have been peeling and coring all those apples for 48 quarts of applesauce all with a paring knife? Who knew htis thing existed? Clearly not me.
I love my apple thing-a-ma-bob too! It's awesome. I have not grilled apples. Um...so doing this. I love grilled fruit! Thanks for sharing!
I MUST HAVE ONE!!! How fabulous. Not that it would change anything. Not that my children think that apples comes sliced in bags or that bowls of goldfish appear magically whenever the dreaded words, "I'm hungry" come along. No that never happens in my house. Never!
:-)
I use my apple cutter all the time but I've never tried grilling the apples. YUM! I'm checking that out.

See- I look at that and go- wow! my chickens would love to eat all the cores!
I totally love my apple slicer too! I think that recipe would be awesome for camping. I think I'll try it this summer for sure!
Grilled Apples?! I'm in love
I was the same way about my apple slicer. I absolutely refused to buy one for DECADES, thinking it too indulgent. Silly me. Now apple pies are easy peasy
Sounds delicious and oh so simple! And it will remind me of my mom and her love of baked apples. Although, I have to say the apple corer slicer did not work so well for me. I finally went back to a knife and just cut each of the 4 sides off the core. A lot more waste that way, but the corer/slicer would never cut very well. Maybe I just needed a better one...
I so need to buy an apple slicer. I remember as soon as I get home, but somehow it vanishes completely from my mind when I'm at the store or making my list.
Also, I want to slice Swiper. I hate Dora too, come to think of it. I banned them and their acid reeling cartoon brain washing my kid from the house. Except in the car, when one of them is falling asleep only minutes from the house, thereby ruining any chance of a nap (and an hour of rest for me) I sing loud and scream "Sleeper no sleeping, sleeper no sleeping..." Over and over again.
Sometimes it works.
Slicer, no slicing!
The apple slicer is one of the greatest inventions EVER!!
Never thought of grilling them, gonna have to give this a try!
