Entitled: A Book Nerd Takes it Up a Notch

I've always enjoyed a good title. The perfect, succinct blending of words, sending an invitation, a hope, and a prayer.

My favorites titles include: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and The Confederacy of Dunces.

Not surprisingly, these are all amazing books.

I just spent the last week with my extended family. Lovely people. I adore them. Many of them hold strong political views. Scattered around the house are books with incendiary titles, such as The Obama-Nation (groan), and Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild.

This is not a political blog. I will simply say that I do not own my own copies.

Yet, I find the titles, with their overwrought  descriptors and colons...amusing. And in interest of mocking all walks of life, my boyfriend, Malcolm Gladwell, also loves the ridiculous title. Have you seen his book generator yet?

This led me to wonder about my own life. In title form.

Waiting for Waxing: A Hirsute Horror Story.
I Left them in Greensboro: A Subaru, A Storm, and Six Hours
Stop Doing That to Your Penis!: Life Lessons for My Sons
I Lost my Husband to Angry Birds: Mobile Devices and the Spouses Left Behind

On this fine Monday morning, I invite some discussion. What are the titles of your life? What book titles linger for you?

Oh my gosh, I would totally be willing to co-author "Stop Doing That to Your Penis" the story of my life as well as "Go Back to Bed It Is 4 am."

A couple years ago, my title would have been;

"There Will be Poop"

This morning would be titled;

"Saved by the Short Bus."

I'd read anything you wrote. My current title: "The word, poop, still makes me laugh."

"Use Your Words, or So Help Me I'll Put You in Time Out Until Naptime: A Nanny's Survival Guide to the Preschool Years"

Oh how I adore a good title. I had to look up that Obama Nation one - ouch. You have to admit, kind of clever ;)

For me - today, it would be "Why I Hate Special Snacks, Hails Storms and Mental Fog: one crazy woman's reflections on motherhood."

Pretty sure I'm the new Erma.

That would be Hail Storms.

See Mental Fog.

Yes, I would have a sequel to Stop doing that to your penis! entitled, Go pee, your jiggling and also, this one dedicated to my husband: Are you kidding? I haven't slept in six weeks! And finally: I am wearing a bra - what happens after two hungry boys are nourished.

I don't have my own title. Too fried at the moment. Wanted to stop and say hello before I dive into book generator linkage.

That book generator is hilarious.

As are the titles for your life. I love them!!

I still remember the first time I heard the title to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and KNEW that I had to read it. Anything with a title that great had to be good.

Titles are not my strong gift. After reading your fun titles, I know this to be true....if I ever get a book published, I'm going to call you for help with the title!

I went to your book generator link to come up with some inspiration for my book title. It gave me this:

"Blank"

300 empty pages to fill with your own f*ing theories.

And that was somehow perfect.

This idea? Is genius!

The first real books that came to mind are ones that describe older stages- YaYa Sisterhood (I miss free days with girlfriends), or a baby book like Let's Panic (sad at being done with babyness).

But as for right now? The book generator gave me: The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference.

Love that, love this!
