How do you solve a problem like blue glasses?

Almost three years ago, we brought Joel home from the pediatric ophthalmologist with a prescription for glasses. He was seven months old, and in the midst of his mouthing phase, not to mention just on the cusp of kamikaze style-acrobatics.

We wisely decided on the virtually indescribable Mira-Flex lenses. They do stand up to all of his nonsense, but I'm starting to wonder...is it time to retire his signature blue frames for something more "grown-up"?

Internets, I need your opinion. He's had the exact same frames throughout his entire life, and will be turning three this summer. Observe how the glasses have shrunk over time:

 Just purchased.

 A few months in.
 One year.
 Two years
Yesterday. (He thinks it's hilarious to stick out his tongue.)

Also, you may note that the glasses are actually working. His eyes are less cross-tastic then when he was first diagnosed. He even has bifocals, proving once again that he is an overachiever.

Let me add that the only store that makes these frames within the tri-county area is an hour away. Would it be better to get glasses that break more often with a local store? Or should we keep the existing type of frame for at least one more year?

It's all you, Internet. Have at it.

I think if they're working, why fix 'em. He's adorable. It seems like a stress to worry about things getting broken, him getting poked or cut...

I agree with Jenny. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I would not get less sturdy glasses till he's a little older. Plus, I think he's adorable in his blue glasses. They're his trademark. He's the Sally Jesse Raphael of the preschool set. (Or something like that.)

Can't imagine Joel without his blue glasses. But that's just me being selfish.

I bet he loves his glasses. Stick with them until he asks for something different.

kids+indestructible=evidence that god exists

I think these glasses have become more like his signature... keep them until of course if he decides otherwise

I agree especially with him being a little boy,, employ non destructible for a while longer. He is a doll baby in them I love them personally

OH but he is SO cute in those blue glasses!! I say keep them for a while longer!

This sounds terrible, but if it was a girl, I'd say get new ones. But a boy...well, having 2 of my own, they break every damn thing possible. Keep him in the indestructible glasses until he has a job and can replace them on his own. ;)

If it were me, I'd vote indestructable. And with a face that freakin' cute, he could make anything work.

I'd let him hang with them for a bit longer. Also, his glasses will always have to be blue. I want to see a 20 year old Joel in blue framed glasses. I bet you had no idea when you picked them out that they would be SUCH a trademark. :)

Joel is such a cute little ham on his own and wearing his glasses is like the spotlight shining on him. Let him live in the spotlight.

I have no clue what you should do, but I have to say...I love the blue glasses and in my opinion at 3 he doesn't need grown up glasses...he will grow up soon enough.

He's happy with them. He's young yet. I vote to keep them another year.....or until he's not happy with them or you can't stand them any more.
He is so dang cute, Nancy!!

This is difficult for me, because I do love the glasses and I did pay money to see Paul wearing them (Paul rocks!), BUT there is a season, right? I just don't know...

Based on cuteness factor and the indestructible factor, I say keep the blue ones. Ditto to what Minivan Lover and clearness said: they're his trademark, and his own little spotlight.

I think they are cute.

As long as he is still happy with them, I would say keep them another year.

During the ages of 2-5, my daughter typically went through 2-3 pairs of glasses per year (the first pair broke on the way home from picking them up at the opthamologist's office). I think he should keep these as long as he possibly can!

We went through a similar conversation with Godson. We stuck with the same frames until they were shot-- But when he got into about 3rd grade we really stepped up the frames nearly each year to help his appearance mature in the eyes of this teachers and other adults--Because, since he was smaller than the other kids and he looked so darn cute in the glasses, they treated him more like a baby, actually it almost felt like he was the party favor instead of "one of the (age appropriate) kids". Does that make sense?

Of course by middle school, he was so "hip" his glasses cost more than mine, but that's another story.

Hope that helps. jj

My son started wearing glasses when he was seven, and we went through at least 3 pair per year at that age due to constant breaking... I can't imagine what it would have been at an earlier age. I'd say keep the indestructible ones for now...

(And Sears has great deals for kid's glasses when you're ready to get regular frames.)

If you decide to get new glasses, there are some that are bendable metal they are kind of cool, and would probably stand up to most of the beating they would get. They are called flexon glasses and when I did a quick google search there are some others now. Easy Twist was one of them. lol I know I sound like spam, sorry for that. Both my parents are opticians so I just remembered these when I read your post.

I think whoever came up with the design of these glasses is a genius. Indestructible AND cute. It must be so nice to not worry that he'll break them. I'd stick with that feature as long as possible.

What a cutie pie. His glasses go quite well with his striped sweater. :)
